I began photographing when I was eight years old with a Kodak Instamatic given to me by my paternal grandmother.   My father soon taught me how to process and print black & white film.  By ten, I had set up a temporary darkroom in the family bathroom and was photographing all around my home town of Burlington, Vermont.  Some years later, I went on to study photography formally and received a bachelor's degree from Bard College in Annandale, New York where I studied under Ben Lifson and Stephen Shore.  From 1986 - 1988, I was a black and white exhibition printer for Stephen Shore (portraits from Andy Warhol's Factory), Wendy Ewald (various work) and other N.Y.C. based photographers.

In 1989, I received an artist-in-residence grant from the Irish Arts Council (Dublin, Ireland).  With this grant, I taught photography to children in Connemara, Ireland and photographed the Irish "travelling people".  The resulting photographs (mine and the children's) formed an exhibition titled "Griangraf Na Paisti" which toured Ireland, the United Kingdom and Europe in 1989.  That same year, I also lectured in photography at Dun Laoghaire College of Art, just outside Dublin.

Although my past work has until 1999 involved large, medium and small format film cameras, my current photography is done primarily with a small format digital camera.  At present, I am also using Photoshop and a negative scanner to edit and rework a large set of small format portraits made in New York City and Budapest, Hungary between 1991 and 1994 (when I studied informally with Helen Levitt*).

Simultaneously, I am constantly in the process of redesigning and upgrading the pictures at motorcycletours.com, the web site for Northeastern Motorcycle Tours, an adventure touring company I began in 1996.   I'm very excited by the possibilities of digital imaging and have abandoned the traditional darkroom in favor of the "digital darkroom" which allows me to work in natural light and gaze out the windows from time to time at the landscape of rural Vermont.
